'Atentado'
This is an important false friend because whereas it looks like the innocuous English word 'attempt', it actually means 'a terrorist attack', and so unfortunately it's something that you see in the papers quite a lot these days.
'Attempt' in Spanish is 'intento', and the verb, 'intentar'.
