Idiom of the Week

'El que no llora, no mama'. Literally this means 'the one who doesn't cry, doesn't suckle', so the English equivalent idiom would be 'the squeaky wheel gets the grease' Matthew

Idiom of the week

No necesitar abuela = to blow your own trumpet. For example: Pedro no necesita abuela = Peter blows his own trumpet This is an interesting idiom, because it is based on the principle that it is your grandmother who gives you a lift and praises you, even when you don´t deserve it, so if you don´t need your grandmother, it´s probably because you are doing all the necessary praising of yourself, you are blowing your own trumpet. Has anyone got any other favourite Spanish idioms?

Hello Matthew and thanks for the greeting!

I've been studying off and on at home for a few years, but it's been extremely sporadic. I started out with the Rosetta Stone CD's, which I really enjoyed quite a bit. But they are very expensive, and everything is basically presented in the present participle, which starts to get old after a while. You just don't feel like you're advancing in your ability to understand the language.

I also have the Michel Thomas CD's. I enjoyed them as well, but it does get tiresome hearing him correct the students ad naseum. In addition, I have other miscellaneous Spanish learning CD's and books from lesser known companies.

I honestly believe I'm at a point now where I need one on one instruction. I need to speak the language regularly. I can understand quite a bit of what I read, but I just haven't been consistent enough with my at home schooling. I really do think I have a pretty good aptitude for languages, I just need to take the next step and get serious about it.

I was just in Miami this summer, and it bummed me out that I was unable to understand the Spanish I heard spoken there. I could make out a word here and there, but for the most part I was lost. Maybe this site will help me get to the next level. I hope so.

Your blog is very informative-good explaination of spanish verbs and idioms and good cultural notes. I love the featured singers. One suggestion is on the SLS Spanish Club the music is so loud I can not hear the phrases-this is the practice I need -to listen to Spanish. Also, anyone intersted in a very good intensive program to learn Spanish is: VisualLinkSpanish.com. It gets you learning the language very quickly at a basic level then part II is a more advanced Spanish course-you feature this program on your google ads. Thanks for helping me learn more Spanish.

thanks Matthew--The course involved mostly grammer-mostly written work. with 30 students in the class it seemed we did not speak a lot. I need a lot of work on listening to Spanish and trying to translate the Spanish as i hear it. I also bought visual links which has been a very helpful program. I will try your mini course out in the next few days too. Thanks for any help or suggestions

I am not sure if you received my comment as it does not appear. However here it is again or maybe a similar one. You asked me if I had any Spanish. Well i have some but not nearly what I would like. I have studied for 4 years but the more I do the worse it gets. I have forgot more than I know -- but that's not difficult. I find that when I speak I have to think too much and the vocabulary is not always to hand. Verbs like Llevar, echar, hacer, dar, quedar etc which have many uses and all the idomatic expressions give me lots of trouble as does the correct use of the subjunctive. Listening is slightly better but I am not all that good at that either. However I continue and I hope that some day soon I will reach my goal.

Kind Regards

Archie

thanks Matthew, I find that when I talk to spanish people, they're too polite to correct my spanish but that's what I need. When you set up your conversation groups I'll be signing up.

Hola Matthew. Siempre, he encantado todas cosas espanolas - la cultura, la gente, el idioma etc. Creo que tengo la sangre latina! En 2005 compre un apartamento en Los Altos (3km al sur de Torrevieja) adonde vengo tantas veces tan posibles cada ano - para mi es divino. He estado aprediendo espanol desde 2005, con una profesora privada - ahora mi profesora es mi amiga y, a veces, venimos a Espana juntas.
